9:00 - The Science of Place and Health: Research at the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar, Director, Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute

This presentation will provide an overview of the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute’s research portfolio and its central goal of developing a new understanding of health through the lens of place and environment. The session will highlight current areas of study, how they connect to broader questions of community and individual well-being, and future plans for expanding this work at the institute’s new downtown campus. Attendees will gain insight into how place-based research is shaping innovative approaches to health and the opportunities it creates for collaboration.

9:30 - From Toxic Legacies to Healthier Futures: The Work of UofL’s Superfund Research Dr. Sanjay Srivastava, Director U of L Superfund Research Center

This presentation will highlight how the University of Louisville’s Superfund Research Program is uncovering how environmental exposures affect human health and developing solutions that protect and empower communities. We will explore how cutting-edge science, from molecular biology to community-based studies, is helping to identify hidden risks in our environment. By linking research to real-world change, the program is building pathways toward healthier neighborhoods and stronger public policy.

10:00 - Heart Hacks: Rewiring Metabolism to Outsmart Disease Dr. Steve Jones, Director, Center for Cardiometabolic Science

What if we could outsmart heart disease by flipping the body’s own metabolic switches? Dr. Steven Jones, Director of the Center for Cardiometabolic Science at the University of Louisville, takes us inside the cutting edge of cardiometabolic research. From surprising molecular cross-talk to bold new therapeutic strategies, this session reveals how decoding the “wiring diagram” of the heart and metabolism can spark game-changing breakthroughs for cardiovascular health.

10:30 - Envirome/School of Health Partnership: The Humana Center for Community Health Research Dr. Ted Smith – Director, Center for Healthy Air, Water and Soi: Interim Associate Dean for Research, School of Public Health and Information Sciences

Dr. Smith, Co-Director of the Humana Center for Community Health Research, will introduce the center’s vision and the unique opportunities it creates for collaboration between the University of Louisville’s School of Public Health & Information Sciences (SPHIS) and the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute. This session will highlight the center’s initial focus areas, explore how its mission aligns with community and regional priorities as well as Humana’s resources, and outline ways for researchers, students, and community partners to get involved. Participants will gain insight into the center’s structure and its role as a hub for advancing impactful, collaborative health research.
